Can’t Go Any Further South Canada!

Quick what’s the southern most point in mainland Canada? It’s this point at 41.57 degrees north latitude.

Point Pelee Point - Essex, Ontario, Canada

You are looking at Lake Erie from Point Pelee. The point is at the tip of the peninsula of Point Pelee Park just outside of Leamington, Ontario. Watch the waves come at you from both sides.

Do a 180 and you’ll see where you exited the woods of the park and landed on the beach. It kinda looks like you’re on a remote island.

Exiting the woods you’ll get a good shot of the beach, coastline and lake on both sides.

To get to Point Pelee in the warmer months you drive into the park and stop at the travel centre. At the travel centre they have a little museum where you can get some history and ecology of the park. There you hop on a quick shuttle to go the last 2.5 kilometers. It’s about a 20-25 minute walk.

Another day, another great spot along Lake Erie and the Great Lakes.

  1. I’ve never been here, but I love that you went out of your way to visit a (somewhat) obscure geographic point. I find myself doing this all the time. I love extreme points, There’s something satisfying about looking out over a place and saying “Well, that’s all there is!”

    • The title of the post is exactly what I said to myself when I couldn’t walk any further. πŸ™‚ I was researching places to checkout on the Great Lakes and this point kept coming up. I wanted to go to nearby Leamington too so lot’s of fun in one trip.

  2. I just came back from a quick press trip to Maumee Bay State Park Lodge…spent a bit of time yesterday morning having breakfast on my patio overlooking Lake Erie. We also took a boat ride out to the Toledo Harbor lighthouse. We’ve actually been to lots of great spots along Lake Erie in Ohio over the past few years…the nature preserves along Rt 2 east of Toledo, Ashtabula (with tons of covered bridges), Marblehead lighthouse…and Erie, PA is pretty nice as well.

    • Love Maumee Bay State Park. Been there quite a few times. Usually quiet and relaxing. Everything else heading east on Route 2 and into PA good too. Need to explore Erie PA more in depth and checkout the Lighthouse in Toledo. Thanks for the tips! πŸ™‚
