Another evening, another stroll over to a lighthouse and Lake Michigan. This time the stop was in South Haven. I arrived at the South Beach right before sunset. What a great spot for a picnic.
My primary motivation for coming here was to checkout the lighthouse and lake. The mix of clouds and sky on this evening, leading to a beautiful sunset, was an added bonus. I walked onto the south pier that ran alongside the beach and headed towards The South Haven South Pierhead Light.
I looked towards the shoreline and beach as I walked.
Others stood on the pier capturing photos as water from the lake waves kept hitting the payment. It was a chilly and windy evening. That just added to the scenery. The path towards the lighthouse took me underneath the catwalk. It is the original catwalk which links the lighthouse to the shore and is one of only four left in Michigan.
I reached the end of the pier and 37-foot high lighthouse. The sky was getting more colorful by the moment.
The current lighthouse became operational in 1903 and a station at this spot dates back to 1872. It marks the entrance to the Black River.
Looking over to the right you can see the north pier light opposite. Another light that looks like a cigarette to me haha.
There’s a splash! π
Doing a 180 there’s the catwalk and behind the sunset lit town.
The sun was almost down. I captured a few more pictures on the pier before heading back onto the beach to watch the sun go below the horizon. The orange colored sky! I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. π
I got back in my vehicle and headed onto the elevated Monroe Boulevard along the shoreline to capture some pictures from above. It was pretty dark at this point so I turned on the flash. There is South Haven pier and lighthouse off in the distance.
Of course I ran into a park bench in a beautiful, romantic spot.
It was another great evening venture over to Lake Michigan, this time to South Haven. There is just something about lighthouses, the beach and a Lake Michigan sunset! π

What are some spots that you’ve loved capturing a sunset from in your travels or around home?
So lovely! Having just moved back to Michigan from California, everyone thought I was crazy but nothing rivals these intimate beach sunsets. Cali is nice but it can be so busy. Michigan is hands down the best place for sunset. I’m partial to Holland Beach myself.
Thank you! Lots of people don’t realize how beautiful Michigan is, especially around all the Great Lakes. Try to get to Holland Beach at least once a season. Love checking out Big Red and walking the pier. π
Some beautiful shots here of the Michigan shore I love. Thank you from Chicago!
Thank you! Gotta love Lake Michigan. Beautiful shoreline in your neck of the woods too!
Your pics of the lighthouse and the sunset are amazing, seriously!!! Me encantan! Maybe one day I’ll have the opportunity to go back to Chicago & around to discover those nice beaches I had not time to see during my first trip!
Thank you! :o) A beautiful and romantic setting for sure. Hope you do have that chance. Lots of great things to explore around Lake Michigan.
That sky is amazing!
It was a beautiful night. Couldn’t believe the colors. A great combination of sunlight and clouds. π
I think Michigan is one of the most beautiful states in the US. I love South Haven although I haven’t been there in several years. I can never decide if I like South Haven or St. Joe best.
I would have to agree, but I might be a little bias haha. Both great spots you choose. Love the South Haven lighthouse, pier and views from the houses up-top. Although you can’t really go wrong in any town along Lake Michigan. Beautiful. π
