Standing alongside Owharoa Falls in New Zealand.

New Zealand is home to countless scenic waterfalls, one such being Owharoa Falls on the North Island.

Owharoa Falls sits on the Taieri Stream and within the Karangahake Gorge right off State Highway 2 about half-way between Paeroa and Waihi.

It’s actually made up of three waterfalls with the most accessible being only a five minute walk away from the main parking area. You can also see the falls as part of a walk/hike along the seven kilometer Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway.

It was a 90-120 minute drive from Auckland, making it a great day trip option. A fun experience standing alongside Owharoa Falls, with swimming next to being another plausible option.

  1. I visited New Zealand 11 years ago and it was such a beautiful place! I remember seeing a lot of waterfalls but can’t remember any of the names now. 🙂

    • Cool beans! It is a magical place. I’m sure you were in awe seeing all of the waterfalls, so many more to explore. 🙂

  2. All of the Catlins waterfalls walks, South Island. Auckland region, Karekare Falls, Goldies Bush and Kitekite Falls in Piha, Cascades and Lake Wainamu, Bethels. These are all located in the Waitakere Ranges not wheelchair accessible but beautiful not too difficult walks. Also Hunua Falls in South Auckland, many viewing points. Owaharoa Falls is a well deserved swim on a very hot day after trekking around the Karangahake Gorge, lots of walks highly recommended if time allows, especially windows walk.Enjoy beautiful NZ all visitors 🙂

  3. Thats a nice place!

    • It is, right of a main road, but has the feel of being far away from everything. 🙂 Loved the time I spent along the Falls.

  4. I want to go back! I can’t believe that I missed this. The only falls I saw while in NZ were Huka Falls. Small, but a beautiful blue. Reminded me of the color of Cinderella’s dress. 🙂

Guess I need to get back to NZ…not that I’m complaining!

    • I miss it more every time I look at pictures from or hear about people’s recent experiences in NZ. Was near Taupo but really didn’t do any stops. Will have to keep Huka Falls on the radar for next time. To more New Zealand fun in the future! 🙂

  5. Huka Falls is pretty but Sutherland Falls on the Milford track is spectacular.

  6. Looks like a beautiful waterfall although you seem a little overdressed for swimming 🙂

    • Haha. Was an option, but I didn’t partake. Should have though. I did get a little wet getting closer to the Falls then the pictures show. 🙂
