Trying the Cappuccino Flavored Potato Chip.

Those that follow me know about my love affair with coffee. Whether at home, a local coffee shop or on the road I’m usually drinking coffee in all of its forms. By forms I mean a pour over, drip, Chemex, as part of a latte, etc.

The taste and smell of java deliciousness has made me try things like coffee flavored ice cream, but one day I was roaming a store and saw these…

Lay's Cappuccino Potato Chips

…cappuccino flavored Lay’s Potato Chips. I did a double take. While seeing a delicious cappuccino on a product definitely drew my eye and a smile, I was also thinking to myself, “Huh?”. Potato chips and coffee, really?

This flavor was the result of Lay’s Do us a Flavor? competition. Lay’s ran a contest taking potato chip flavor ideas from everyone, before picking four flavors to produce. One flavor will be saved via a website and social media vote, with the winning contest contributor receiving a one million dollar prize!

I didn’t buy them at first, but after posting about it on Facebook a couple of friends, who I’m sure know of my coffee love, suggested I try them out. So the next the Lay’s Cappuccino Potato Chips were secured and opened right away.

Yep, it smelled just like a cappuccino. If you closed your eyes and someone put the bag in front of you, you might actually think there was a caffeinated beverage up close, not a potato chip snack.

I proceeded to taste a few of the chips and was kind of indifferent. You could definitely taste the flavor of cappuccino, but in no ways did it feel like I was eating a potato chip. It wasn’t like anything I had tasted before. The chips contain no caffeine, so naturally I had a cappuccino in liquid form alongside for the ride.

Afterwards, walking around having a dozen or so random others try the chips, the responsive was more on the negative side. One person actually liked them a lot. The rest of the bag was consumed since I bought it, but I probably won’t by it again for that next road trip. Hmmm probably not. 🙂

Thinking back to the contest, if I had submitted an entry it might very well have been coffee based. Latte potato chips anyone? 🙂 You gotta give Lay’s props for being innovative and letting it’s fans help shape the products it creates. Next time I go to the store I might snag one of those other contest flavors just to try. Who knows unless you try!

  1. That is surely just plain wrong…crisps = salty…😄

    • A very unusual Lay’s flavor, I don’t really see it doing well in the voting compared to the others. Who knows, could be wrong. 🙂

  2. That is so weird! I love coffee but can’t drink it so maybe this might be a substitute!

    • A coffee lover will definitely appreciate the smell of an opened bag of them. You’ll have to let me know how you like them if you try! 🙂

  3. I haven’t tried these but my love of java will override my belief they’ll be bad. If it’s coffee, like you, I’ve gotta try it.

Your comment about coffee ice cream made me laugh, like you’d never heard of it. Where I grew up coffee ice cream was a food staple. All stores have their own brands, and not just regular but low fat and sugar free too. What else was common – iced coffee, coffee cream filled Dunin Donuts, coffee hard candy, coffee icees. All my favs. I now live a 1000 miles from the land of forethinkers but luckily the world has caught on to what we’ve known for 250 years – coffee is the drink and food of the gods.

    • I’d heard of coffee ice cream, but not sure why it took me so long to try it haha. 🙂 Need to get it again and also keep my eyes peeled for other coffee flavored goodies. I like your last sentence, agree 100%!

  4. I haven’t seen these guys in Canada, but I did see the Cinnamon Bun flavor and must say, they are DELECTABLE. I am a very optimistic food eater, so maybe they aren’t as good as I make them out to be, but never the less they fulfilled my desire to get something different out of the regular run of the mill chips in a bag.

    • I thought I saw the cinnamon bun flavor awhile back, whether traveling in the US or Canada. Should have tried. Definitely agree with you on trying stuff out different then the norm. 🙂 Who knows you might find a new favorite snack.
