A New Zealand Drive Along the Firth of Thames.

Roadtripping around New Zealand is beautiful no matter where you are at. Driving along the southern and southeastern shores of the Firth of Thames is no exception.

The North Island stretch of road just south and west of the town of Thames, along State Route 25, features picturesque views of the rocky shoreline, mountains sitting off in the distance across the Firth and more.

You will want to get out of your vehicle often to enjoy the water views, just like the sheep do.

Also a part of New Zealand’s Pacific Coast Highway, this part of the country is easily accessible from Auckland. It is about a ninety minute drive, making it great day trip option. As you approach Thames you will be entering the Coromandel Peninsula.

Tip: Continue on along State Route 25 past Thames and you will embark on a 150 km drive around the hilly and forest-covered peninsula, winding up along the Pacific Ocean.

  1. Incredible, I always find new places to visit in this country… I’ve been lucky enough to travel there twice from London and just when you think you’ve done it all! HA! My Favorites in the North Island revolve around the tourist hot-spots I am afraid, 90 mile beach, Bay of Islands, White Island, Rotorua, Taupo and of course the Waitimomo Caves. We did however get to Hobbiton last time we visited and take a tour of the Lord of The Rings/Hobbit set which was very cool. One of my favs that I missed the first time was in the South and was Able Tasmin which I just fell in love with.

Thanks for the gorgeous picture – I may have to return now ๐Ÿ™‚ A Wandering Memory

    • It seems like there are infinite beautiful places to visit in NZ. Rotorua was very nice. My favorite spots on the North Island are Bethells and Piha beaches near Auckland along the coast. So close to the city, yet the feel of being so far away. Hope to checkout Hobbiton some day. ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers!

  2. You are so right. Still there?

  3. When I visited NZ we took a day trip around the Coromandel Peninsula from where we were staying in Tauranga. It was just stunning! Cathedral Cove was a particular highlight.

    • Cool beans! Unfortunately have not made it there, ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Need to make sure it is on the New Zealand bucket list. Looks like a magical place from all the pictures I have seen.

  4. This is one of my favourite NZ locations, I could tell some tales of meeting ‘mad’ Barry the potter and Mike Cogswell in Coromandel. Also stayed in lovely mansion just out of town. Should have stayed longer, will go back.

    • Thank you Karen! Sounds beautiful! Hope to get back to that part of the country sometime as well. ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers!

  5. Other good day trips from Auckland include getting out to some of the islands: Waiheke for a bike ride, Rangitoto for a walk round a volcanic island, or snorkelling & diving off Goat island. Also head west to the Waitakere range and the west coast beyond. Spoiled for choice!

    • Thank you for all the great ideas! Have taken road day trips westward to Piha and Bethells Beach’s along the Tasman Sea. Arguably my favorite spots in New Zealand. Definite agree, it doesn’t matter which way you go, it’s bound to lead you to something beautiful!

  6. Completely agree no matter where you drive New Zealand is just so beautiful! We have been here 5 months now and have another 8 to go, absolutely loving all the bits we have covered so far – bay of islands, piha, rotorua, waitamo, hobbiton, lots of other local drives around auckland. Headed to South island next month, really looking forward to that ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Cool beans! You’ve seen a lot of great places so far. Loved my time road tripping around the South Island, you will have a blast. Driving alongside Lake Hawea, hanging in Queenstown and hiking around Mount Cook were highlights.
