Getting to Know Me – Roadtripping to See the Denver Broncos

Ever since I was a kid I have loved the Denver Broncos American football team. Growing up my Dad and I would get out on the open road for a father-son weekend road trips to watch the Broncos in action.

Back in the late 80’s-early 90’s the Broncos and Cleveland Browns were great teams playing almost annually, many times in Cleveland. Every time they were at the old Cleveland Municipal stadium we were there. One of those years we sat in the old Dog Pound. I kept quiet about my allegiance that year as we were surrounded by some passionate and rowdy Browns fans who disliked the Broncos you could say. 🙂

We also have roadtripped to Buffalo several times, sitting in the snow and pouring rain to watch them play the Bills at Ralph Wilson (Rich) Stadium. Locally we took in the Broncos and Lions at the old Silverdome on Thanksgiving in the early 90’s.

Denver Broncos fan

This season I had the chance to go see the Broncos in action again when a friend secured tickets for the game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. I definitely wore the Bronco orange-and-blue this time and was surprised to see thousands of my Denver friends in attendance cheering them on alongside me. Sitting in the lower level I had the chance to get close to the field during warm ups which gave me goosebumps.

One thing about this story though is that I have never been to Denver to catch the Broncos at home. It is arguably number one on my bucket list. I thought I got goosebumps going to see them in Detroit recently, image how I would will feel seeing them in Denver. One day!

Do you have a sports team you grew up loving and would travel to watch them play even to this day?

  1. The Braves all the way! Try to go to 2-3 games/season.

    • Do like the Braves a lot too! Been quite a while since I’ve been to a game. Hope their youth movement pays off quickly. 🙂

  2. Kaylene Chadwell

Yes, the Nashville Predators! Would love to do a few-game road trip soon!

    • Cool beans, they are pretty good these days. Fans seem really into it just from watching them on TV. Hope you can make that happen soon. 🙂

  3. Here is one for you to look up…Mossley football club…

    • I did look them up haha. 🙂 Cool beans! Like their colours. Must be a fun, small, intimate atmosphere there. 🙂 Do see Premier League and other football matches on the TV here in the US all the time now.

      • You are so right…sport at an amateur level has a really nice atmosphere…while not quite the premier league…but a lot less overpaid primadonnas! 😀 I think they play in the 9th tier of the league ladder now. The cost is so much less and you can still see a good match.

I recall the Broncos being in the Super Bowl when I was young. I think John Elway was QB at the time. I have just started watching some NFL games here in NZ which are free-to-air. I don’t really have a favourite team although for some reason I have always quite liked the Steelers.

      • Steelers are one the more popular, historic teams. A good team to like! They have a loyal following even outside Pittsburgh. Yep Elway and the Broncos made the Super Bowl 3 times in the late 80’s-early 90’s unfortunately losing each time. The Broncos did win the Super Bowl later on in ’98 and ’99, which put me on cloud nine as you can imagine. 🙂 They are pretty good this year, will see how it winds up.

  4. Ever since college I have been a University of Tennessee fan although it has been awhile since I have seen them in action. Since Peyton Manning is our number one beloved alumnus it makes the Denver Broncos my current favorite team too although he sure has dropped off since the end of last year and this year.

    • Have enjoyed watching Tennessee play since I was young, but with my Atlanta ties like the Georgia Bulldogs more. Yeah can’t believe how quickly he tailed off, a lot because of injuries though. Hope this isn’t the end and he can end his career on the field.

  5. Sounds like an awesome trip and destination for a road trip!
