Is the Michigan summer open road taking you to Mackinac Island or just into the Upper Peninsula and St. Ignace? If so, take some time to drive westbound U.S. Route 2, one of the major east-west drives in the U.P. Once you are about ten miles off I-75 and the Mackinac Bridge you will find yourself along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
You will be on a part of the official Lake Michigan Circle Tour. For miles and miles it will be just lake, beach, sand dunes and brush straight ahead. The brush along the road is narrow, along with the beach that snugs the northern shore of the Great Lake.
There are plenty of places to park the car alongside the road to walk the beach. Despite being here in the middle of the summer, I had the scenery all to myself.
Well without further ado, some more pics of my time out on the open road in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan:
What lake side drives are your favorites? Any in Michigan?
Check out the North Shore along Lake Superior, MN!
Thanks for the tip Jennifer! Have only seen Lake Superior from the eastern half of the U.P. Can imagine it’s just as beautiful. π
An American road trip is on my bucket list! Thanks for the tips
No problem! Glad you liked. Hope your American travels take you somehwere along the Great Lakes. All five are beautiful to drive alongside. π
You’re right, this is a beautiful drive!
No doubt about it! π
This looks so beautiful!
Thank you! This area is an amazing part of Michigan. π
This post reminds me I have not hit a Lake Michigan dune all summer. What a fail. Definitely will not make that same mistake next year.
Hope not. Seen lots of pics of them from friends in my Facebook feed this summer. Don’t get to a lot of the dunes along there as much as I would like myself. Haven’t been to Sleeping Bear in ages. Need to change that.
I have driven this a few times and it is absolutely beautiful.
It is a beautiful Michigan drive. Relaxing and peaceful route. Can imagine how it and the area looks right now with all the Fall colors. π
