Photo(s) of the Week: It’s Ann Arbor Foodie Time at Frita Batidos.

Frita Batidos in Ann Arbor, Michigan offers Cuban inspired street food. My go-to there is the Chicken Frita topped with a sunny side up egg and shoestring fries. You can never have enough fries there so you’ll always find in front of me garlic cilantro fries alongside for the ride. It’s definitely Ann Arbor foodie time now!

#ElCafeDe2013 Coffee tip of the week: Find the Goose Bumps!

When I walk-in somewhere for a coffee and the atmosphere within gives me goose bumps, that makes the coffee drink that much better. That’s what happened when I walked into The Laundry this week in Fenton, Michigan.

The Laundry sits right outside downtown. The black-and-white 1950’s style flooring and the oldies playing lightly in the background gives off a relaxing, old-school atmosphere.

It was very early so I got to choose which chair I wanted to sit in. You’ll be hard pressed to find two of the same chairs. So many colors, shapes and sizes, so many possibilities.

The Laundry lures visitors from all around as it’s known for its huge breakfasts, sandwiches and pastries, made from the freshest of ingredients. More on visiting as a foodie in a future post though. 🙂 Today was about grabbing #ElCafeDe2013 #60!

I found my chair…

…and still having the goose bumps I ordered a salted caramel latte with whipped cream from their extensive coffee drink menu. The Almond Roca Mocha, French Silk, Nutty Irishman and Creamy Dreamy Caramel Delight, don’t worry you’ll get your turn!

That trusty water was alongside as always. 🙂

The early morning on this day provided delicious coffee. Great java by itself makes one smile, but if you…

Tip #14: …find a place that gives you the goose bumps when you walk in the door….

…it will make the coffee that much better. What non-chain coffee shop or café around home or in your travels has given you the goose bumps just walking in the door?

A Foodie: At Home, while Road Tripping and Abroad.

My inspiration for this post came from Karla of Traveller soul and her post Travel Theme: Food. Yum! 🙂

When out on a day toad trip, traveling far, far away or roaming around home I’m always out on the lookout for great eats. You can be sure my camera is not to far away. I got hungry just processing these posts. Well without further ado.

Gotta go. Lots for eats to discover out on the open road. What food and drinks do you gravitate towards when dining out at home and in your travels?

Ann Arbor: A Zingerman’s Breakfast Experience.

It was an early morning and I was thinking Ann Arbor to grab some coffee. Breakfast food was also on the mind. While in-route Zingerman’s Roadhouse came to mind. It’s a place I’d been to many times before, mostly for cocktails and dinner and always had amazing experiences. It was time to take-in their breakfast experience.

I arrived at my destination on the west side of town. The Roadhouse, which open in 2003, is one of several Zingerman’s businesses in the area which date back to the early 80’s. There is also a deli and creamery among other places.

I found myself a spot to sit. It was 7 am so coffee definitely was in order.

A cup of Roadhouse Joe quickly made its way to my table.

For breakfast I decided on the American Breakfast. Scrambled eggs with peppers and 2-year Vermont cheddar. It came with country sausage, sourdough bread and strawberry preserve and breakfast potatoes. Everything is homemade. Not pictured is the freshly squeezed orange juice they gave me a sample of.

I found myself eating the preserves sans the bread. I wanted to be like Joey Tribbiani and dive into lots of jam, thinking of Monica’s jam plan in Friends. So good!

Along for the ride from left to right behind the breakfast was their version of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, the locally made Clancy’s Fancy Hot Sauce and the well-known McIlhenny Tabasco Pepper Sauce. I’m not a fan of hot sauces, but took a stab at each. Not to bad. I mostly ate the food without sauce to get the full flavor.

They must really known me haha. They kept my Roadhouse Joe mug constantly full. In fact, when I thought I was going to get the bill they brought me a to-go cup filled with it and a hot, right out of the oven doughnut topped with muscovado brown sugar. What a nice surprise.

Gotta get an up close shot of the brown sugar deliciousness.

Along with samples as you can probably tell, the service was exceptional. Every step along the way I was told in cool detail about what I was ordering and eating, with some historical tidbits thrown in. Great times.

If it’s the early morning and you’re looking for great service, food with the freshest of local ingredients and a few surprises during the experience then get to Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Time to get back there for dinner again too!

Checkout their website and presence on Facebook. You can also see the range of businesses and foodie deliciousness under the Zingerman’s umbrella.

What is a good place for breakfast and coffee in your neck of the woods or that you’ve come across in your travels?

Sam’s (New England Clam) Chowder House on the PCH.

New England Clam Chowder. You could argue it’s my favorite soup and food. It all traces back to when I was a kid, going chowder hopping from place to place in Cape Cod with my dad. Ever since then, if I see it on the menu, I’m ordering it.

When I was organizing the places I wanted to go to in San Francisco and along the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), seafood and clam chowder of course came to mind. I hit up Google and Twitter and various review sites and this place in Half Moon Bay, Sam’s Chowder House kept coming up. I gotta get there.

Half Moon Bay, perfect. It was in-route on my already planned PCH trip from San Francisco and Pacifica to Santa Cruz, Capitola and points beyond. I got there around lunch time and parked a couple of blocks away along the road. This place is busy, it must be good!

Sam’s Chowder House opened in 2006 and sits right along Half Moon Bay and the Pacific coast. I immediately saw all of the outside seating. Yeay!

I found my spot. There was an ice-cold lemonade waiting for me. Not really, I ordered it when I was in inside. It definitely hit the spot, going through several during my time there. You couldn’t have asked for a better weather day. The sun was shining right on me. Being right along the Pacific Coast in this part of California it tends to me foggy, misty and cooler a lot of the time. I checked out SamCam early in the morning to see if it’d be an outside or inside eating day.

You can also sit on an Adirondack chair without…

…and stare at the beach, blue ocean and skies, the coastline and…

…the greenery and flowers right in front of you. You just wanna run out there and get out on the open water.

Sam's Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, California, PCH

The scenery was breathtaking, but it was time to eat. Some freshly baked bread and sweet butter found its way to the table first. Too bad the outdoor bar in front of me was closed. Who doesn’t love an outdoor tropical bar?! 🙂

Sam's Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, California, PCH

Shortly after the bread came well you can guess. It was New England Clam Chowder goodness time.

Look at those big pieces of Yukon gold potatoes, celery, carrots, little necked clams and more. If that wasn’t enough, there was also smoked bacon within. A foodies dream! It had a great creamy base and was as good as advertised.

Sam's Chowder House, Half Moon Bay, California, PCH, New England Clam Chowder

Hard to believe but that was just a cup. I can’t imagine how big and how much goodness there was in a bowl. I finished the chowder fully satisfied, next! You see I also had ordered the fish & chips. You can always tell how good a seafood place is to by their fish & chips. 🙂

The fish & chips came with coleslaw and plenty of tartar sauce. I try to be fair to all additives when eating beer-battered fish, rotating between lemon, tartar sauce, ketchup and Four Monks California Malt Vinegar English Style.

The fish was as good as it looked. 🙂

They tried to get me to order dessert, which I should have since everything is made in-house but I was full and didn’t want to overeat since I was getting right back out on the open road. In hindsight, a regrettable decision. Something to look forward to next time along with one of their famous lobster rolls! Have you had one?

They also offer a spacious inside dining experience and a bar area.

You can get up close and personal with the seafood…

…including the clams!

Sam’s Chowder caters to large private parties. How about an oceanfront wedding and reception? If you can’t make it to Half Moon Bay be on the lookout in the Bay Area for the Chowdermobile, Sam’s very own food truck!

It was a great day on the PCH, more on that in a later post. It was x times better with my stop at the award-winning Sam’s Chowder House. The service from the hostesses to my waitress was outstanding. Others came by as well asking me if I needed anything. For great scenery and atmosphere, tasty fish & chips and of course their New England Clam Chowder, you know where you need to get to. I don’t know how I never new about this place before. 🙂
