Capturing a Michigan Winter Storms Beauty in the Moment

Having to be in Brighton, Michigan right in the middle of a winter storm (Mateo) randomly gave me the idea to capture the snowy scene the only way I know how.

I walked and laid down on Main Street and nearby Huron Meadows Metro Park and Hammel Road. There was ample white to capture without a sole around. I wanted to get out on the open roads before it was disturbed with salt, plows and lots of vehicle traffic.

This post was put together right in the moment as I captured some Pure Michigan winter beauty. Well without further ado.

Tip: I recommend capturing Hammel Road, a dirt road just outside Brighton, no matter the season. Fall and winter though take this spot to an even greater level.

Lake Michigan Lighthouses in Winter: A Michigan Photo Gallery

Being part of a Michigan winter brings with it frigid temperatures and on-again off-again snow. Hanging out along the immediate Lake Michigan coastline takes it to another level. Lake effect snow and high winds off the lake make for a bone chilling experience.

I’ve gone over to various parts of such coastline over the years, in January usually, to capture winter’s rath. I’m fascinated with how it takes hold to the various lighthouses, piers and beaches which you will find plenty of each along Lake Michigan. Some of my favorite shots I’ve taken over the years, all bundled up, follow. So worth it! Well without further ado.

The 2017 Edition of Autumn in Pure Michigan

Another Autumn has come and gone here in Pure Michigan and the Midwestern US. Most of Fall was unusually warm. Between that and being out of town during the heart of the season, I wasn’t able to experience the fall colors as much as in years past.

I did have a chance to sneak out and venture around Ann Arbor, Brighton and the western suburbs of Detroit a little bit. It doesn’t matter where you are in the state, it seems the beautiful colors will be right in front of you. Well without further ado:

Pure Michigan Sunflowers as Far as the Eye Can See

We are on the backside of the summer season here in Michigan and the Midwest. That meant when I was out on the open road this week, I came across a field of Pure Michigan sunflowers as far as the eye can see.

I got as close to the never-ending field in Whitmore Lake, just outside Ann Arbor, as I could without going in. The early morning light just beamed off the sunflowers that were as tall as me. All of the bright blue sky served as the perfect backdrop. Dawn is my recommended time to experience sunflowers.

With sunflowers usually come some bees, but I was lucky enough only to see a few. Can you spot the one below? 🙂

You will find this field on the northwest corner of North Territorial and Whitmore Lake roads. I parked alongside Whitmore Lake road watching the morning dew soak my jeans and shoes. It was well worth it to see the summertime beauty that is sunflowers. I will let the rest of the pictures do the talking.

From my experience sunflowers don’t seem to stay in full bloom for very long. I was so happy that I drove through this intersection this week. 🙂

Where else would you recommend checking out sunflowers in Michigan? Where have you come across them in your travels?

Cruising Along Lake Michigan in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Is the Michigan summer open road taking you to Mackinac Island or just into the Upper Peninsula and St. Ignace? If so, take some time to drive westbound U.S. Route 2, one of the major east-west drives in the U.P. Once you are about ten miles off I-75 and the Mackinac Bridge you will find yourself along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

U.S. Route 2, Lake Michigan shoreline - Upper Peninsula, Michigan

You will be on a part of the official Lake Michigan Circle Tour. For miles and miles it will be just lake, beach, sand dunes and brush straight ahead. The brush along the road is narrow, along with the beach that snugs the northern shore of the Great Lake.

U.S. Route 2, Lake Michigan shoreline - Upper Peninsula, Michigan

There are plenty of places to park the car alongside the road to walk the beach. Despite being here in the middle of the summer, I had the scenery all to myself.
