Florida: Sarasota Bayfront Park Part II.

It was a lot of fun checking out Bayfront ParkΒ in Sarasota. Lot’s of greenery, kid’s having fun and palm trees, boats and high-rise condos dotting the landscape around Sarasota Bay. It was time to quench our thirst and relax after walking around the parks peninsula. My girlfriend and I noticed a bunch of tiki huts in the one part of the park we’d yet to scope out.

We walked over and saw the entrance to Oleary’s Tiki Bar and Grill.

Palm trees and tiki huts galore.

We sat down on some stools at the outside bar, luckily right next to a cooling fan. The sunglasses came off and it was Rum Floaters time. It’s one of their signature drinks yum.

They had a good selection of appetizers but we decided to just drink and enjoy the tropical atmosphere.

Doing a 180 on our bar stools this was the view in front of us. Palm trees, boats and Sarasota Bay, what could be better?!

After facing the water for a minute or two we turned around I immediately smirked. A bottle of Jagermeister was now sitting right in front of me. Jagermeister has been my shot of choice over the years. The bartender must have sensed I wanted that haha. I resisted the urge. πŸ™‚

Oleary’s offers plenty of picnic style seating along the bar and the water as well.

Like many places around here, people were coming to the bar not just on foot or by car, they docked their boats along the nearby shore as well.

We’re at a tiki bar so of course you’re going to see some tiki torches. There’s plenty of room for kids to play and have fun in the sand. A little further down the sand and shoreline…

…you’ll find water sport renting opportunities at Enticer Water Sports. Sailboats, jet skis, paddle boats and kayaks you’ll find. Will have to get out on the open water next time. MoreΒ high-rise condos to look at off in the distance.

Oleary’s Tiki Bar and Grill was a great way to relax and cool down. Great cocktails and paradise indeed as their sign indicates. I would recommend stopping in if hanging around Sarasota Bay and Bayfront Park (Island Park). What is your favorite tiki, tropical, outdoor, beach bar in Florida? Anywhere?

Zigzagging a State-Line Flora-Bama Style.

People cross or zigzag state-lines all the time by car, train, in the air, even by walking sometimes. How about zigzagging while enjoying a tropical drink, walking on cool white sand, enjoying water sports on a big body of water or even while tossing fish around? Well you can do all those things and more and zigzag at the same time at Flora-Bama.

Walking up to edge of the top-level looking out towards the south, you’ll immediately see the white sand and the blue open waters of the Gulf of Mexico along with umbrellas and lawn chairs on the shoreline to sit and relax. In the first photo below you’ll see the photo cutouts, which is a good area in which to people watch. πŸ™‚

…the Bushwacker! It’s a local favorite, a coffee alcoholic beverage, that can be found at many spots in the area, but this is the the place to try it out. How many did I have on my stop here? 1, 2, 3… I’m not telling haha. πŸ™‚

Flora-Bama is also well-known for the annual weekend long Mullet Toss event. They still had some signage up from the last one, which just missed rats! When I first heard of it, like my others I’m sure, I was thinking people were shaving off their mullets and throwing them about. Nope.

Mullet is the most popular fish in the area and everyone comes out to the beach like crazy for the tossing of them. The mullets are actually being zigzagged themselves being thrown during competitions from a target in Alabama into Florida.

Flora-Bama from the beach. It was quiet because it was still early on a weekday.

On the same stretch of beach the Mullet Toss takes place on, there are many water sport opportunities including parasailing, jet skiing and riding on banana boats.

There is a gift shop up with t-shirts and lot’s of souvenirs. I picked up a copy of the book “Bushwhacked at the Flora-Bama” signed by the owner, Joe Gilchrist. Looking forward to the great read!

My recent experiences crossing state-lines by vehicle in Zigzagging a State Line. was fun but zigzagging a state-line Flora-Bama and beach bar style was great. With the scenery, great drinks and entertainment options it’s a must stop along the Gulf Coast. Who I am kidding, the Bushwacker makes it a must stop all by itself!

What beach bars have you hung out at in your travels that you would recommend? Any of them along the Gulf Coast of Mexico? What are your favorite state-line crossings?
