Photo of the Week: Mingling with the Sheep of New Zealand.

It’s time to hang out with the sheep in New Zealand (Aotearoa). Was road tripping the South Island between Arthur’s Pass and Christchurch when for some reason I wanted to mingle. 🙂

Christchurch: A Botanic Gardens in Pictures.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens in New Zealand features one of the best collections of flowers including roses, native trees and plants, greenery, colors and more that I have come across. Lots of Christchurch time has equaled lots of times hanging out in the gardens. Below are some photos that I thought I’d share here in addition to my original post from a few years back.

What gardens would you recommend that you have come across in your travels?

Christchurch: Up-top the Cathedral.

It’s been over a year since the February 2011 earthquake claimed lives, destroyed many homes and businesses and caused extensive damage in the heart of Christchurch, the CBD and to the famous Christchurch Cathedral. 😦

I shared some pics of the Christchurch Cathedral that I took a week before the quake in New Zealand: The Christchurch Cathedral. Down below are some pics of my time up-top the Cathedral in the stone bell tower (spire).

A look to the south. You can see Cashmere and Port Hills and other mountains and hills off in the distance.

Straight ahead is Worcester Street and points west. In the bottom left where the umbrellas are you can see a market in the heart of Cathedral Square.

A better shot of the market where souvenirs and other small items were being sold.

The top of the tower from inside. I didn’t reference specific buildings because I’m not sure which ones are still standing or are badly damaged.

The spire is long gone and Christchurch Cathedral as a whole is in the process of being deconstructed to a safe level. Earlier in the year for a short time they allowed people in to say their goodbyes to a national icon. A temporary “Cardboard Cathedral” will serve until a time when a new Christchurch Cathedral can be built. The city center is still closed.

The rebuilding in Christchurch will be in full swing before you know it and the town will be better than ever because of the resolve, heart, passion and friendliness of their people. I can’t wait to get back there. Some links to more resources on what’s currently happening:

Photo of the Week: The Road to Mount Cook Village.

Road to Mount Cook Village, South Island, New Zealand

A rest stop, viewing point along Mount Cook Road (State Highway 80) in Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand.

It’s along the first part of the 55 kilometer road to Mount Cook Village that runs alongside Lake Pukaki. Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand, is off in the distance. A great spot to get photos of the lake, mountains and greenery.

I remember having a bowl of cereal sitting on the hood of the car just soaking in the view. Just out on the open road indeed.

The Pines Beach in New Zealand.

You can never visit enough beaches in New Zealand. On this day, the choice was The Pines Beach.

The beach sits right outside Kaiapoi and just north of Christchurch on Pegasus Bay. The beach is within a nearby village of the same name. The Pines Beach village got its name by being around both a beach and a pines-based forest.

Looking to the south you can see Christchurch and further back the Port Hills.

There is lot’s of room to surf, swim and walk the coastline. A panoramic shot.

It was a relaxing, quiet and warm day looking out into the Bay and further out, the Pacific Ocean.

What is your favorite beach around Christchurch and/or along Pegasus Bay? In New Zealand?
