The Coffee Shop: My Place to Think.

Some people go to the park to think. Some people to the bar. When traveling some think while on a plane or train. Yet others go for a drive. While I do some of the latter, I also do a lot of my thinking at the coffee shop. Surprise, surprise! ๐Ÿ™‚

As I type this on my smart phone I am sitting in The Red Hook coffee shop in downtown Ferndale, Michigan. I am in thinking mode to a delicious latte. I don’t know what it is about coffee shops. The cozy atmosphere, the friendly people and a hot beverage on a cold day all play a part in making it a good place to think. The Red Hook definitely fits the bill.

To coffee shops! Note next time I will have to checkout Pinwheel Bakery more which is within. Well it’s time to get back into thinking mode. ๐Ÿ™‚

What kinda place do you gravitate towards when wanting to get away and think when around home or while traveling?

A Michigan Holiday Coffee in Frankenmuth.

During the recent holiday season, I worked remotely one day in the festive Michigan small-town of Frankenmuth. Part of that day was at The Harvest Coffeehouse & Beanery right in the heart of downtown.

Being here once before, I already knew of their outstanding seasonal specialty drinks. A Gingerbread Man Latte Breve was the choice again! I worked and enjoyed the hot beverage within the cozy, well-decorated coffee shop.

Lots of locals, tourists and holiday shoppers passed through on this wintry day. The Harvest Coffeeshop offers a variety of coffee beans and grounds to go, as well as pastries and friendly service. You can even purchase the used books that line the bookcase shelves.

If you’re a coffee lover and/or looking for a place to relax while shopping in Frankenmuth then this is the place to go. The last time I was there I saw a little Gingerbread Man in my coffee! ๐Ÿ™‚

#ElCafeDe2013: One Year, One-Hundred Coffee Shops.

With my ever-growing love for coffee, I set the goal at the beginning of the year to visit 100 non-chain coffee shops around home and in my travels in 2013. Guess what? Mission accomplished!

There definitely were some challenges and rule changing along the way. I wasn’t in Georgia nearly as much as expected, so I had to be more aggressive in my coffee shop time and coffee drinking in Michigan and when traveling. I wound up visiting some chain spots like Philz Coffee in Silicon Valley, California. It’s a local chain and if you have had their Mint Mojito Iced Coffee, you’d understand why I stopped in. Some restaurants and pubs also made the list like The Buena Vista in San Francisco. It’s the home of the Irish Coffee! Of course that place is going to count. ๐Ÿ™‚

During the process I visited coffee shops from Alaska, Washington and California to Ontario, Ohio and Illinois. I even visited one coffee shop and enjoyed coffee with no land beneath me. The Celebrity Solstice cruise ship was my home for a week enjoying java deliciousness along the British Columbian and Alaskan coasts.

Drip coffee, lattes, french press, cappuccinos, flat whites, specialty coffees, pour overs and more all had their place. As you can tell, Instagram was my go-to application for documenting the java deliciousness.

Some days it was grabbing a coffee before work, other days I was on a day trip experiencing a half-dozen coffee beverages and shops like in Columbus, Ohio recently. Now that’s getting caffeinated!

Along the way I started a weekly series of tips based on the experiences I was having drinking coffee and hanging out in coffee shops. I visited one-hundred coffee shops, but that didn’t mean I only had one-hundred coffee beverages. One my tips was if you like a place and it’s not nearby, take advantage trying out one beverage after another as I did at PRESS in Dayton, Ohio.

A lot of the best times during the year came when I hung out with others. I coffee shop hopped in Georgia with my Dad, in Alaska and Seattle with my fiance, in Chicago and Toronto with Pola of Jetting Around and enjoyed a refreshing iced coffee in Toronto with Karla of Traveller Soul. Not all interactions with people were planned. While at Astro Coffee in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit I randomly ran into and hung out with fellow travelers Alicia of My Life Untethered, Emily of Emily Baillie Photography and others.

Interacting with the baristas, while watching my coffee being made had its place as well.

You can checkout the one-hundred coffee shops that I wandered into in 2013. Also, search for the hashtag #ElCafeDe2013 and my feed on Instagram to see all the coffee deliciousness I have experienced this year like the Peanut Butter Koopa Troopa I enjoyed at the sci-fi themed Wormhole Coffee in Chicago.

Well it’s been a wild, caffeinated ride. The New Year is upon us and so is #ElCafeDe2014. The plan and goals for the upcoming year will be different. Stay tuned as I am in the coffee shop and java planning process now.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday season. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope to see all of you caffeinated out on the open road in 2014. Cheers!

I’m enjoying my Guatemala Pour Over in Luck Bros’ Coffee House in Columbus, Ohio. It’s a sunny, wintry day in the Grandview Heights neighborhood.

This is my first Live post, in the moment. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m typing away on my smart phone. To hanging in neighborhood coffee shops!

#ElCafeDe2013: The Coffee Of Gypsy Beans in Cleveland.

When I am looking to take an early morning road trip, read the morning paper, have a great coffee and haven fun being in a city, a lot of the time I wind up at Gypsy Beans and Baking Company in the heart of the Gordon Square Arts District in Cleveland.

I could sit at one of their wooden tables but…

…I always wind up on a stool…

You’ll find desserts and pastries to go along with locally roasted coffee at this cozy bakery cafe.

The coffee of choice on this wintry morning was a Latte which did the trick! I had the The Plain Dealer (Cleveland’s leading newspaper) alongside for the ride. If you’re looking to crank out some work on the laptop get there early as the outlets are limited, but they do offer free wi-fi.

Gypsy Beans and Baking Company is a recommended coffee shop to checkout whenever you’re in Cleveland. ๐Ÿ™‚

Checkout the time I have also spent at another favorite spot Koffie Cafe in the Ohio City neighborhood.
