A few years back in the winter months I stopped at Kensington Metropark in the Detroit area to experience a Pure Michigan winter sunset. Since then it has become my go to spot around the Motor City to capture a winter sun going down below the horizon.
As usual I drove into the park at the Kent Lake Road entrance and then down to the docks at the East Boat Launch. I was immediately reunited with Kent Lake in the Milford, Michigan park. Being bitterly cold, with snow and ice on the ground once again made for a beautiful winter sunset experience. I will let the photos do the rest of the talking.
Where else in the Detroit area and in Michigan would you recommend going to capture a winter sunset?
Back to Belle Isle Park in Detroit I go! I’ve posted photos and written about this spot before during the heart of the summer and in the dead of winter. It’s a place I get to once a season, so below is how it looked on a recent trip in Autumm. Beautiful every time.
The Detroit River is right in front of you with Detroit’s skyline, the state of Michigan and the United States on the right. Turn to the left side of the river and you have the city of Windsor and it’s skyline, the province of Ontario and Canada.
Time to relax and enjoy the view amongst the fallen leaves.
It looks like I have lots of company. 🙂
One spot, two skylines, two cities and two countries. See you again in winter my friend!
Have you visited a spot overlooking multiple skylines, cities, states/provinces and/or countries at the same time?

Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company in the heart of Midtown Detroit has become my-go coffice (a coffee shop turned office) when in the city. Over the course of time I’ve gravitated towards always ordering their Lavender Latte. During my time there the Lavender Latte has…
…hung out at various desks and tables throughout the coffee shop…
…and been alongside for the ride while working…
…and hung out with its beer friends…
…and rested on a stool…
…and checked out the wintery Midtown and Woodward Avenue…
…and been visited by pastry treats like the chocolate chai bread…
…and hung out on ledges…
…and spent a lot of time hanging out at the bar…
…and basically parked itself where ever a scenic coffee shop view presented itself.
To the Lavender Latte, Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company and Midtown Detroit! Well got to go. Have to go find out where the latte will be hanging out next! 🙂

On this early Saturday morning I started hanging out in Astro Coffee in Detroit right after it opened its doors. Quite empty.
Barely a few minutes later all the seats were taken and there was a line out the door at this Corktown neighborhood hot spot. So great to see’
The latte was enjoying the morning at the counter…
…and on a stool waiting for what’s about to happen.
What’s about to happen is lots of people enjoying the neighborhood, conversation, atmosphere, treats and service that Astro Coffee provides. Oh yeah and delicious, hand-crafted lattes and other coffee drinks.
Checkout #ElCafeDe2013 Coffee tip of the week: Choose Your Clothes Wisely for more of the great times I’ve had at Astro Coffee. Back to the latte drinking and people watching!
Some people go to the park to think. Some people to the bar. When traveling some think while on a plane or train. Yet others go for a drive. While I do some of the latter, I also do a lot of my thinking at the coffee shop. Surprise, surprise! 🙂
As I type this on my smart phone I am sitting in The Red Hook coffee shop in downtown Ferndale, Michigan. I am in thinking mode to a delicious latte. I don’t know what it is about coffee shops. The cozy atmosphere, the friendly people and a hot beverage on a cold day all play a part in making it a good place to think. The Red Hook definitely fits the bill.
To coffee shops! Note next time I will have to checkout Pinwheel Bakery more which is within. Well it’s time to get back into thinking mode. 🙂
What kinda place do you gravitate towards when wanting to get away and think when around home or while traveling?
