The Coffee Shop: My Place to Think.

Some people go to the park to think. Some people to the bar. When traveling some think while on a plane or train. Yet others go for a drive. While I do some of the latter, I also do a lot of my thinking at the coffee shop. Surprise, surprise! πŸ™‚

As I type this on my smart phone I am sitting in The Red Hook coffee shop in downtown Ferndale, Michigan. I am in thinking mode to a delicious latte. I don’t know what it is about coffee shops. The cozy atmosphere, the friendly people and a hot beverage on a cold day all play a part in making it a good place to think. The Red Hook definitely fits the bill.

To coffee shops! Note next time I will have to checkout Pinwheel Bakery more which is within. Well it’s time to get back into thinking mode. πŸ™‚

What kinda place do you gravitate towards when wanting to get away and think when around home or while traveling?

Belle Isle Detroit: The Snowy Path To Two Countries.

Once a season I make my way on to Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. It’s an island park that sits in the middle of the Detroit River. I always head to the southwestern tip of the island to capture two cities, two skylines and two countries. Windsor, Ontario, Canada is on the left, Detroit, Michigan, United States is on the right.

I’ve posted about this place before, but this is the first time I’m doing so Live and in the moment. I’m out on the snowy path to two countries in the cold, wind and snow. πŸ™‚ Beautiful.

The Autumn Leaves Up Close in Michigan.

It’s Autumn in Pure Michigan. Corn mazes are forming, apple cider is pouring, college football is in full swing and the transition from summer to winter has begun in earnest. Autumn in Michigan also brings the changing and falling of the leaves. While out-and-about in Ann Arbor, Detroit and Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas, I’ve had the chance to see the leaves of Autumn up close.

Why not start out with the best of the best. I came across this tree randomly while driving around the small-town of Rochester. The bright orange and other colors caused to me to get out of the car and just walk back-and-forth, park underneath and enjoy what this time of year brings.

You never know what colors and Autumn beauty you’ll come up to when your out on the open sidewalk, trail and dirt road. πŸ™‚

Two skylines, two cities, two countries, the open water and Autumn straight ahead on Belle Isle in the Detroit River. Not bad! Hello Windsor, Ontario, Canada and Detroit, Michigan, United States!

On another part of Belle Isle I came across the unique trio of Autumn, beach and skyline.

Some Autumn joy was to found in Michigan’s second biggest-city, Grand Rapids, too along the Grand River opposite the skyline.

The colorful leaves and the open water formed a relaxing duo.

Unfortunately the leaves can’t stay on the trees forever. After a short time and/or a gust of wind they make their way to the ground. Their beauty doesn’t disappear right away though. I felt like a kid, ready to just jump in any pile I came across. On grass that is.

More beauty of the season. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Winter and cold weather may be coming, the warm air of summer may be in the rear view mirror, but to see the Autumn leaves up close in Michigan, that’s a great price to pay.

Where have you come across Autumn beauty in your travels? Do you have the chance to experience the changing of the seasons where you live?

#ElCafeDe2013 Coffee tip of the week: Choose Your Clothes Wisely…

It was a Saturday morning in Detroit and I decided to go out for a coffee. I put my G Adventures shirt on that I got at the TBEX travel conference and got in the car not knowing where I was going.

While driving I decided on Astro Coffee as I had not been there yet in this year of coffee. This was stop #77.

Once in the popular Corktown neighborhood establishment I ordered a Flat White. While waiting I captured some of the scene inside. Lots of pour over action and coffee cups just waiting to be drank out of.

You’ll find unique and cool seating throughout.

The baristas were very personal and took their time to make a great individualized coffee. Perfect!

At that time a group of people came in and starting taking photos while ordering like me. I didn’t think anything of it until they started looking my way. Reading TBEX off one of my sleeves they came up to me and asked if I had attended the conference in Toronto. I said yes and that I was a travel blogger.

It turns out they were four travelers from Toronto in town for the weekend exploring Detroit. They invited me to sit with them, so we hung out and talked for a bit before they went onto more exploration in the D.

I’d like to think that I picked out the G Adventures shirt on purpose. πŸ™‚ I did learn something today.

Tip #21: Choose your clothes wisely…

…when heading out for a cup of coffee. In all seriousness any shirt would have done, but because of what I put on I had the chance to meet and hangout with four fellow travelers for a while. Maybe there is something to that tip! Putting a cool travel company shirt on is a good idea. πŸ™‚

Photo(s) of the Week: Amongst the Flowers in Detroit.

While walking along the Detroit RiverWalk in Michigan there sits the iconic GM Renaissance Center (RenCen) amongst the flowers. A beautiful summer morning in Detroit.
