#ElCafeDe2013 Coffee tip of the week: Sometimes, Go Irish!

It’s Happy Hour. It’s the end of the traditional work day or well into the day of roaming and traveling about. Why not mix up the coffee drinking by…

… #Tip 2: Going Irish! Adding some whiskey to that brew.

There is no better place to do that then Buena Vista in San Francisco, the American home of the Irish coffee!

The Irish coffee at Logan’s Irish Pub in Findlay, Ohio definitely hits the spot too. 🙂

Go Irish! Well maybe not the University of Notre Dame kind, haha. I cheer the green and white of Michigan State.

Photo of the Week: Romantic Park Bench Settings Everywhere.

Recently I’ve taken a liking to capturing park benches in romantic settings. A lot of the shots have been in parks, around water and/or in tropical locales. On a winter weekend day I found a setting that included salt, snow, and cold in small-town Ohio, yet still found intriguing.

This shot is along Main Street at an intersection in downtown Findlay. Watching business owners shoveling snow, people walking trying to keep warm and lots of vehicles just trying to get from A-to-B safely, I found the whole small-town winter setting romantic. In reality you never know where and under what circumstances you’ll find that romantic park bench spot. The whiteness of winter, beautiful! 🙂

An Irish Bars Food Conquers All.

Lot’s of time over the years has been spent in Irish Bars locally and in traveling. They all have great beers, great whiskey and you’ll usually find bands on the weekend with lot’s of singing from the crowd. Soccer and rugby matches you’ll find a lot of the time on big screens and lot of great food will be consumed. Well not at every place. 🙂

Thinking of myself as a foodie, all the points above are secondary except for the last. Great food conquers all! And no Irish Bar that I’ve been to makes it quite like Logan’s Irish Pub in Findlay, Ohio.

Opening in 2010 it sits right in the heart of downtown on Main St. A sampling of the great eats I’ve had here:

Corned beef and cabbage, along with red skinned potatoes and carrots.

Logan’s Mac ‘n Cheese. Corkscrew pasta made with peas, corned beef, onions, scallions and more. It’s topped off with bread crumbs. You can never have too much corned beef!

The regular Mac ‘n Cheese. There was plenty of cheeses mixed in, to go with again corkscrew pasta and topped with bread crumbs. Alongside for the ride some sautéed garlic green beans, outstanding!

You can’t be at an Irish establishment, especially earlier in the day without an Irish coffee.

My most recent stop there topped them all. I heard the bartender talking to someone at the other end of the bar about everything that was in the Full Irish Breakfast. I was intrigued, actually I was sold before the bartender really had a chance to ask.

Eggs, bacon, sausage, black and white pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes topped with parmesan and more. It was definitely a full breakfast.

To go with all the outstanding food and Irish coffees is great service. The food has always come out fast and everyone is always checking to see if you need anything else.

If your ever in Northwest Ohio or the Midwest for that matter make the trek over to Findlay and checkout Logan’s Irish Pub. I need to be saving room for my next conquest there: The Country Fried Breakfast. 🙂

What Irish bars/restaurants would you recommend in your neck of the woods? What memorable ones have you come across in your travels?

Coffeehouse of the Month: George House Coffee & Tea Company

Coffeehouses! I’m sure you know my love for them by now. Previously I’ve described what I look for in a coffeehouse: plenty of electrical outlets, has a lot of traffic, great Wi-Fi, contains great views and makes great coffee and other beverages. Starting this month, each month, I will highlight a local, non-chain coffee house that I’ve spent time in.

When traveling or on the move I will sometimes research one to go to in a given town, other times I’ll just stumble upon one which is more fun. This months coffee house is George House Coffee and Tea in Findlay, Ohio.

George House Coffee and Tea Company is locally owned and sits on Main St. just north of downtown. It’s also right across the street from the University of Findlay, one of the top equine (horse) schools in the United States. Thus the coffeehouse gets plenty of traffic from students and local residents. George House has been open since 1993.

It has the old school feel of a library/bookstore. No music plays in the background leading to a quiet atmosphere, when not many people are around to get work done or hang out.  You can pick up any used (some antiquated) book off the shelves to read and buy if you choose. I usually find something to flip through each time I’m there.

They have countless specialty coffees, tea, espresso and iced drinks as well as shakes, sandwiches and other snacks. My favorite drinks are the hot Butter Crunch and Monkey Tail coffees. All the drinks are reasonably priced. Checkout their menu.

George House definitely thinks Green by carrying a wide variety of green and natural products, by recycling everything they can and by encouraging customers to use their own mugs and recycling what they use there. They also carry every flavor of Torani syrup you can think of as well as mugs, shirts and wide range of really affordable spices. My pantry at home can attest to that. I recommend getting the cinnamon sticks and minced garlic.

Lot’s of people make the drive up and down I-75 between Michigan and the southern states. George House is the perfect place to take a break and a get jump on the rest of the drive with some caffeine. They open early and close late every day so if your ever in Northwest Ohio I’d definitely recommend making a stop at George House Coffee and Tea Company.
