Lake Erie: Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.

A lot of people in the Midwestern United States make the trek over to Lake Erie in northern Ohio every year to go to Cedar Point in Sandusky and visit the various Lake Erie Islands like South Bass (Put-in-Bay) and Kelleys. Others spend time on the Lake Erie Circle Tour and Ohio State Route 2 checking out the sites. There’s another gem in the area, not as well-known to outsiders, that’s worth the stop, Marblehead Lighthouse State Park.

In between Toledo and Cleveland off State Highway 2, opposite Sandusky on the other side of Sandusky Bay and also along Lake Erie is the Marblehead Peninsula.

Traveling to the tip of the peninsula you’ll come across the village of Marblehead as well as the state park.

Upon arriving at the park you will immediately see the 65-foot high Marblehead Lighthouse. It’s the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes and one of the most photographed lighthouses on Lake Erie. Sailors have been getting its help to navigate the nearby rocky shores since 1822. You can get tours and climb the lighthouse for a small fee in the warmer months.

When the lighthouse is open, so is the nearby Keeper’s House. It’s home to the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society, established in 1998. It’s been a museum and tourist center since 2000 showing off all the history of the area.

Walking up to the rocks and shoreline of the park you can lookout and see Cedar Point (Sandusky) off in the distance across the bay.

Also along the shore will be views of Lake Erie and the aforementioned Kelleys and South Bass Island. I was there near sunset with some clouds in the sky which made the lake views even more spectacular.
